One of the most common Scriptures used in teaching the word of God is Romans 8:28. It says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” This Bible verse gives hope and encouragement to those who are going through difficult situations in life. It is their source of comfort.

As much as this New Testament verse features a lot in sermons, there are questions that linger in people’s minds about its true meaning.

Here are 4 questions people ask about Romans 8:28 and their respective answers.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Romans 8:28 KJV

1: Does God really work in all things for your good according to Romans 8:28?

Yes. God’s word is the truth, and this means in all things God works for the good of those who love him. You can rest in the truth that in Christ you have victory over your difficult circumstances.

You may not see how God works in your circumstances, but he has promised to restore everything you have lost. He works in all your bad experiences and causes them to bring good into your life and bless others around you.

2: Does Romans 8:28 mean we can live as we please?

No. Romans 8:28 is a promise for believers. Real believers. Those who are living for Christ. Not those who claim to believe in God but are living like the devil.

The fact that God works things out in our difficult situations and brings good out of them doesn’t mean we are to live as we please. In fact, this verse is not referring to those who live as they please but those who love God by obeying his commands as stipulated in the Bible.

Living as one pleases would amount to abusing the grace God has given us through Jesus Christ. He is ready to forgive your sins and is merciful enough not to give you what your sins deserve.

Romans 8:28 talks of all things working together for those who love God and whom he has called according to his purpose, not those who live as they please.

3: Does Romans 8:28 imply all things are good?

No. This Scripture is referring to things that are both good and bad. It says “all things” meaning everything that happens in your life. The bad things have left scars and great loss in your life not to mention guilt and shame. They have cost you loved ones, money, jobs, businesses, and many other things.

God promises to bring good out of these unpleasant things that have taken place in your life. He knows how to weave the solutions into your life. He works in ways that you may not see or understand, but the result will bring him glory. No matter how bad things are in your life, God’s promise in Romans 8:28 still stands.

4: To whom is Romans 8:28 speaking to?

Romans 8:28 is speaking to believers of Jesus Christ. They are the ones who love God. It also describes them as those who God has called according to his purpose. We show our love for God by obeying his commands. Those who are not born again cannot submit to the will of God for they have not accepted the gift of salvation that makes them right before God.

God is a loving Father and is always after the welfare of his children. That is why he makes sure he is at work in their lives as they yield to him. These are the ones who live according to the Spirit and not the flesh. The following story will show you how God works in all things in a person’s life and brings good out of it.

Nicholas was born without limbs because of a rare disorder called tetra-amelia syndrome. His parents had a hard time accepting his condition. In fact, his mother refused to hold him when he was born.

Growing up, other children bullied him a lot, but he overcame their unkind words and the stares of others. He even learned to joke about his condition. He completed school, went to university and now runs a ministry known as Life Without Limbs.

Today, Nick Vujicic ministers around the world and even enjoys sports like swimming and golf.

Nick’s condition, considered a disability is enough to render him incapable of achieving anything in life. However, he has overcome this challenge and travels around the world encouraging others to live life without limits. God has used his condition to show others they can overcome their difficult situations. God has turned his disability into a blessing that has encouraged others around the world and has brought many into the Kingdom of God.

If we trust God, he can bring a lot of good out the things that cause us pain.

God’s ultimate good in your life is for you to be Christlike

Romans 8:29 shows us the good that God has planned for each of us, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”

God wants to conform you to the likeness of Jesus. He wants you to be Christlike. He sanctifies you each day to present you blameless when Jesus comes back at the end of the age.

As God works in the difficult situations in your life and brings good out of them, he is working towards making you strong and mature in your faith. God works in your heart through the Holy Spirit who indwells you after you accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Short prayer

Heavenly Father, I praise Thee for bringing good out of the bad experiences I have had in life. Thou have told me I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ therefore help me overcome the trials in my life.

Lord, heal me from the hurt caused by all the things that have gone wrong in my life. Restore me to wholeness. Use all the bad things I have been through for Thy glory. I hold on to Romans 8:28 as Thou work in my life and restore all that I have lost.

In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
